Range of Motion Assessment
Range of motion is the primary and fundamental assessment of patients suffering from musculoskeletal injuries. It is the measurement of the achievable distance or angle between the flexed and the extended positions of a particular joint or muscle group.
Numerous
decisions regarding patient status and treatment are based wholly or
in part
on joint motion measurements. It is commonly used to
determine the extent of limited
range of motion in order to help properly diagnose the patient’s disorder as well as to
determine the efficacy of treatment.
Limited range of motion can result from: mechanical problems, muscle spasticity, joint pain, inflammation, swelling, infection, injury, and disease.
